Eating habits of autistic children

Food is the basic human need.We all feel hungry and eat to resolve this hunger.Usually a mother feeds child uptil he learns independent eating. In normal course it extends to not more than one or two years.What if it prolongs to years and years surely it becomes tough . In case of children with special need it becomes very very important that we train our kids for independent eating as soon as possible. Now if you say which kids I am talking about.In case of autism self eating does not come naturally. But not that it can not come.If we train kids giving small targets then they can easily achieve it.Early we start earliest we achieve. All we need to do is follow simple steps : Improve hand eye co ordination by occupational therapy exercises Guide with bites or small portions for how much child should should take in one go . Loss of Grandparents of Sharad

Sharad is a special need autistic child.The son of my friend Preeti. He is may be around 7 years old. All kids are very much attached to their grandparents so was he. Sudden news of sudden death of Shared s grandparents had raised many questions in my heart and mind. Visit to Preeti s house had left another fear in my mind .Fear of breaking the news of loss of much loved grandparents to a child with special needs. I am thinking n thinking but really can't go through the feelings Sharad and his mom are going through. The behaviour pattern of Sharad post the loss is erratic. It seems he feels the pain of his grandparents loss.He is missing their absence.He has stopped eating like he used to.He is eating just to put a full stop to his hunger.He keeps peeping into one room or another.
